Hi Santa, why not use your sleigh? Would be the obvious choice to me! |

Thankyou to everyone who helped out in this thread, we are now sorted with travel arrangements from Thessaloniki. For anyone else traveliing there I can say that I have googled, used Yellow pages, emailed and telephoned many car hire companies in Thes and none allow there cars to cross border. Some even have it there terms and conditions on the web that with company prior permission and a green card payment, they will allow you to, but on trying to book they do not. I cannot of course say no one will hire a car but after alot of using my mouth and internet legs I did not find anyone, just a heads up. You can hire from Bulgaria but of course there are substatial delivery charges. However there are other travel options so do not count Thessaloniki out. Again thanks to all for advice.

Hi Santa,
Thanks for sharing real information, not everybody does that in this forum.
That's very much what I found a month or so ago after having had the same "advice" from Caz regarding "googling for a rent a car company".
It's just not very feasible at the moment since delivery charges for a Bulgarian car to be brought to Greece would be too high.
Cheers and don't be too busy at Xmas! |

You are either on a wind up or you are a totally helpess knob ... if the latter applies do you not understand the concept research ? or is it just that you are so lazy you want someone to do the all work for you |

Hey Caz,
You are obviously using a few twists to call people lazy ... I love the English language!
Are you just pretending you do not get this or do you just not? You keep writing that many such rent a cars exists, they don't, it's as simple as that. Could some of those optics of your be of help to read your posts?
Also did I say I wanted anyone to look this up? No, I did look this up a few weeks back and almost as thoroughly a Santa. Obviously if you insist on "seeming to remember" pigs flying, apart from the general laughter you will get the odd one that will ask for the shots!
If you are trying to offer your help, we do not need it (since shutting up when you do not know seems too much to ask... )
Now seriously: I would not think you would be intentionally misleading people so I am wondering if perhaps, by insisting there are plenty of companies that allow these rentals, you simply want to get people like Santa or me to do the "research" for you.
To all else: thanks for all the help, it's obvious that many newbies like me have the same idea about driving from Greece and you quickly steer them in any other direction. |

Maybe it is just me, but out of curiousity I googled "Car Hire, Thessalonika Airport to Bulgaria".
As I do not know your details I submitted my own.
Several firms seemed happy to quote me a price.
Maybe it is the "airport" bit that makes the difference?

Hi
Yes I did the same many times over, I could get plenty of car hire from the airport or anwhere else come to that in Thessaloniki, its only when you book and state the car needs to go to Bansko they (in my case) all said no crossing of the border even if there terms and conditions hinted it may be possible. I only posted my last comment as a thanks to those who have helped me and for anyone like myself, who is venturing to Bansko for the first time, has no practical experience of the border regulations there and may have been considering doing, what I thought would be easy in hiring a car. Of course for all I know the border may not carry out any checks at all, but at the very least I would make the assumption you have no insurance on the car and they are probably gps tracked anyway. Now looking forward to a great week and fun New Year.

Harrowell, just type Caz's name if he is for real, I no longer need it!
Sorry Caz for spoiling all your fishing lines... You know there are no Greek companies that allow cars into Bulgaria, your family needs a transfer instead for the half term break. ;-)
I got the same result when I 1st tried, but "do not seem to remember" which company actually offered me anything Caz could use..
So Harowell are you and Caz close? |

Paulo ... I apologise for calling you a knob
Prior to our visit to Bansko last february via Thessaloniki I considered hiring a car , I did manage to find serveral hire companies that did cross-border rentals , this was advertised on their websites and like harrowell said i was able to get online quotes.
A regular car was a fair price but I needed an 8 seater as there were 6 of us. A people carrier was very expensive so I decided to get a transfer with Axeman Discovery. This was fairly priced and the service was excellent, this Feburary we are again flying in via Thessaloniki and again have been quoted a fair price from Axeman Discorvery and will possibly use them again.
Whilst on the plane and at the airport I spoke to several families and groups of people that we hiring cars and driving to Bansko , indeed even the forums boss 'The Duke' was on the same flight and I seem to recall him saying he had hired a car.
If I recalled the actual websites I got quotes from I would post the details |

No problem, namecalling is not my thing so it bounces quickly.
Whatever, but at the moment as Santa and I found out there are NO Greek companies that allow cars into Bulgaria. Perhaps some of them got burnt last year? |
